$100 Million Surf Ranch Announced – Coolum, Sunshine Coast


A unique tourism and water sporting facility has been announced for Coolum, Sunshine Coast. Queensland.

In an announcement by the World Surf League (WSL), the proposal would span a 529-hectare site in Coolum and deliver a state of the art would class sporting and tourism facility.

The proposed development labelled a ‘Surf Ranch’ will be headlined by 11-time world champion Kelly Slater, managed by property developers Consolidated Properties and constructed by Hutchinson Builders.

In an interview with The Urban Developer, Don O’Rorke, CEO of Consolidated Properties confirmed the company is driving the project that would seek the World Surf League (WSL) also get behind the $100 Million development.

Andrew Stark, general manager for World Surf League (Asia Pacific) outlined that the core market for WSL was Australia and the project could be in operation by 2021 pending approval.

“We want to ensure we and our partners strike the right balance between economic development and sustainable growth for the coast,”

“And we view the Sunshine Coast as a natural home for a Surf Ranch, given its culture, history, and roots within surfing as well as its pristine beaches and commitment to environmental sustainability.”

Kate Jones, Minister for Tourism recently visited Kelly Slater’s original Surf Ranch located in California, to understand the wave-technology that aims to create a series of perfect waves for surfers to practice.

“Having seen this experience first-hand, I can say without doubt that this will be a major drawcard for thousands of people around the world,” Jones said.

Simon Latchford, chief executive for Visit Sunshine Coast outlined that the development under Slater brand name will raise the hype of the project and increase the appeal to visit the region.

“While Visit Sunshine Coast is enthusiastic and excited by the project, we are very mindful it must fit the approval criteria laid down by Sunshine Coast Council and state government,” Latchford said.
