Protective Awning – Waterfront Place & Naldham House, Brisbane City
A change to a development application approval has been lodged for new Protective Awning for the Waterfront Place Commercial tower in proximity to Naldham House, 193 and 197 Mary Street, Brisbane City.
Designed by Arkhefield, the proposal seeks to amend the approved design of the Waterfront Place awning to ensure it presents as an architecturally significant structure that integrates with the proposed design of the Eagle Street Pier redevelopment and the outdoor seating area of the approved Naldham House redevelopment. The revised design seeks to create an architecture feature consistent with the broader Eagle Street Pier redevelopment and riverside precinct
revitalisation. Necessary measures are to be put into place to uphold the safety and comfort of pedestrians and patrons of Naldham House.
Development Details
– Removal of the existing shade sails from Felix Street to Mary Street
– Construction of an architecturally significant awning
– The awning is of metal sheeting, a solid aluminium panel edge and a reflective aluminium soffit
– Pin lights that create a graphic motif
– Twin steel columns, roof beams and cross bracing fixed to the Waterfront Place façade
– Columns have been strategically placed near the outdoor seating area of Naldham House
– Lights mounted to the steel columns for public accessway lighting
– The awning will ensure coverage is provided over the new Naldham House deck to satisfy
– Awning positioned slightly higher than the current shade sail (average height 11.9m)
– Preserved view corridors from the Naldham House Level 2 terrace
– The awning roof will be constructed to fall towards the Waterfront Place building
– The revised awning does not intend to amend the Naldham House glazed glass roof awnings

Naldham House Awning
According to the planners at Ethos Urban, “The change does not introduce new impacts or increase the severity of known impacts. The awning will replace the existing structurally impaired shade sail and has been designed in the most design responsive manner to preserve the heritage views and aspects of Naldham House”.
“The awning will be slightly higher than the existing shade sail to preserve views to Naldham House and the river and ensure the continued protection
of patrons and pedestrians from the risk of falling glass from Waterfront Place. All stormwater will be adequately collected from the roof and drained to an appropriate lawful point of discharge”.
