Supersize Oval Complete – Iona Catholic College, Wynnum
The Iona Catholic College has announced that construction of an enormous new oval ‘St Eugene Park’ will be completed in February, after commencing work on the outdoor sporting facility in mid 2020.
In 2016, Iona Catholic College published in their newsletters that St Eugene Park (oval) will include refurbished facilities and be upgraded to facilitate the home of Football, Tennis and Swimming as well as a support role for Cricket.
Since then Iona has seen the reintroduction of AFL into Term 1 of the Associated Independent Colleges (AIC) Sports program and as a result sought planning and consultation to build a fit for purpose AFL oval for inter school competitions and training.
Father Michael Twigg, Iona College Rector was reported to outline that the new AFL oval project was a complete replica of the size and dimensions (161m x 138m) of the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) and the only in existence throughout schools in Queensland.
“The reasoning behind the field is that it meant that Iona could train and play every one of its five football codes (rugby union, rugby league, football / soccer, touch and Aussie rules) inside the grounds of the college”. “This is a unique blessing to have the resources so close for each of the students”.
“Aussie rules has a growing profile and participation rate since the Association of Independent Colleges introduced the sport in 2019 and Iona already has a strong and positive partnership with Wynnum Vikings and Morningside Panthers and now the Brisbane Lions”.
Father Michael Twigg, further outlined that a series of training days had been hosted at the new venue, with the Brisbane Lions attending to inspect the new AFL oval project and the event was published on social media.
“Iona has hosted and will host teams of local significance, Brisbane Heat WBBL, Wynnum Manly Seagulls and now Brisbane Lions and this gives our students and wider community exposure to great experiences of aspiration,”
“As a support to the learning of the college, sport holds a very special place in the culture of Iona and the College is blessed with facilities that we like to be shared with the wider community.
“Having the Lions at Iona is a wonderful opportunity to give back to a team that brings much joy to many people within our city and state”. “Welcoming the Lions fits in with our wider goal of community support and they are one of the great sporting teams of our state,” Father Twigg said.
The announcement was posted onto the Iona College Facebook Page, outlining that Iona College will formally open the outdoor sporting facility in 2021.
