Aquatic Centre Redesign – Langlands Park Memorial Pool, Panitya Street, Greenslopes (Stones Corner)
A development application has been lodged for extensions and refurbishments to Langlands Park Memorial Pool, located, 7 and 31 Panitya Street, Greenslopes (Stones Corner).
Designed by Conrad Gargett Architects, the proposal seeks the entire redesign of the existing Aquatics Centre, proposing additional Indoor and Outdoor Sport and Recreation Facilities within a number of new buildings, structures and building work throughout the Langlands Park Memorial Pool.

The proposal is for two (2) existing swimming pools demolished and replaced with four (4), new landscape and building works on most existing structures. A new entrance (with kiosk) is to be established beside the heritage listed gates. The caretakers residents will be retained and the pool plant rooms will be repositioned beside it to accommodate the improvements.
Proposed development works:
– New 25 metre (6 lane) swimming pool
– Repositioning of the 50 metre (9 lane) outdoors swimming pool
– Re-orientation of spectator seating for the 50 metre pool
– Re-locate and extend to 25m the length of the existing ‘learn to swim pool’
– New shade structure over learn to swim pool, canteen and servery
– Redesign of the Kids Pool, with shade and lawn space
– New canteen, office and storage building
– New ancillary clubhouse building for indoor training and activities
– Memorial Gates used as new primary entrance point
– New emergency services entrance via adjoining carpark
– Internal improvements to landscaping, greenspace and amenity
– Improved shading and seating
– Demolition of existing gym and shade structures
– Refurbishment of the existing male and female amenities and staff facilities
The existing aquatic facility is serviced by off-street car parking and there is no change proposed. Pedestrian access is provided via the existing Memorial Gates from Panitya Street and a service access is maintained from the adjoining visitor car park.
A Heritage Assessment has been completed by Brisbane City Council, who granted a heritage exemption certificate (dated 15th November 2017) that provides 24 months of exemption for the works being carried out. Brisbane City Council does not believe there to be an impact on the heritage significance of the subject land, or the wider local heritage place.
The planners at Cardno state, “Council determined the proposed development will not have a detrimental impact, or will only have a minimal detrimental impact, on the cultural heritage significance of the place. As such, the proposed development, where carried out in accordance with and to the extent specified in the exemption certificate”
The proposal is for 1,280sqm (24%) of site cover over the 55,740sqm site area.
