Innovation & Technology Precinct – Petrie
The Moreton Bay Regional Council has launched its new Regional Economic Development Strategy (REDS) that sets the guidance for growth in innovation, industry, trade and investment for the next 20 years.
Part of the REDS is a bold region building project for the Mill PDA (460ha) site that will include the Petrie town centre, train station, existing buildings being constructed for the university and the undeveloped areas of the site.
The new project will provide a mixed use redevelopment that seeks to provide an enormous innovation and technical precinct north of Brisbane.
Tech and Innovation Project Area
– Petrie Town Centre
– Petrie Rail Station
– The former Amcor Petrie Paper Mill Site
– University of the Sunshine Coast (Moreton Bay campus)
– The Mill undeveloped greenfield land.
Formal endorsement of the new strategy was made by Council on 3 February 2021 and Mayor Peter Flannery outlined his vision to business and community leaders.
The area is a “sleeping giant about to awaken”. “This 460ha site holds untold potential as the largest greenfield innovation precinct in Australia,”
“The site includes the Petrie Town Centre, Petrie Rail Station and the former Amcor Petrie Paper Mill Site, and from a council perspective, an area totalling 65ha of greenfield development potential”.
“We are going to build a tech and innovation hub twice the size of Brisbane’s CBD. In fact, The Mill is expected to deliver 8600 ongoing jobs and add $813 million into the regional economy per year on average, once fully realised.”
“From future residential land to industrial land as well as areas for commercial and retail development, the region can accommodate just about any business”.
“Our access to markets is enviable with easy road and rail access to the Brisbane CBD.” Mayor Flannery said.
Encouraging businesses in the region to get excited and get on board the #TeamMoretpnBay hashtag, Mayor Flannery outlined that in these unprecedented times businesses have had to adapt and do away with the ‘business as usual’ attitude.
“The game has changed, the world has changed. Fortunately, Queensland is seen as the safest place in Australia right now and Moreton Bay is seen as something of an investment haven”.
“The momentum coming our way this year is because the smart money knows we’re a safe bet. Moreton Bay is back, open for business, and poised for future success”.
“We already know that our unique combination of affordable housing, employment opportunities, natural environment and Council’s investment in essential infrastructure make this the perfect place to live, work and play”.
“So, while the road ahead is not mapped, we are one of the few regions with a real plan. It won’t all be smooth sailing, at times it will be tough and at times it will be uncertain. But in everything there is opportunity, and that’s what the REDS is all about”.
“So, whatever the road to recovery holds, and whatever you take away from today know this: It is a road we will travel together, because we are #TeamMoretonBay.”
The Council has set some other bold region building projects which include a SEQ Northern Freight Terminal, Wamuran Irrigation Scheme, North Harbour PDA and Scarborough Harbour Masterplan and the Mill Tech Hub.
The REDS focuses on how to continue the growth of the region’s economy and cultivate growth opportunities by supporting the development of existing businesses and attract new investment.
