Community Consultation (Stage 2) – $20 Million North West Transport Network, Brisbane
The Brisbane City Council has announced a series of potential transport infrastructure ideas and solution options for community consultation regarding the nine-kilometre North West Transport Corridor strategically preserved between Carseldine to Everton Park since the 1980s.
The ideas have been produced as part of a two-year study to develop a business case to address the transport network issues in the North West of Brisbane. The business case involves community consultation to share feedback on traffic congestion, travel habits, behaviour, poor transport services and where infrastructure could be improved.
OPTION 1 – Roads
Idea 1 – North West Transport Corridor road
– relieve pressure on the north west transport network
– reduce traffic congestion on key roads, such as Gympie Road
– encourage walking and cycling
– support movement of workforce through the region
– improve the freight network, benefiting the regional economy
– potential Airport Link, Inner City Bypass and/or Western Freeway connection via a tunnel.
Idea 2 – North West Transport Corridor tunnel (Carseldine to Western Freeway)
– relive pressure on the north west transport network
– reduce traffic congestion on key roads, such as Gympie Road
– improve the freight network, benefiting the regional economy
– reduce property and environmental impacts on the North West Transport Corridor.
Idea 3 – Gympie Road upgrade
– create four additional lanes of traffic to relieve pressure
– improve local and regional travel times
– improve the freight network, benefiting the regional economy.
Idea 4 – Gympie Road tunnel
– relive pressure on the north west transport network
– reduce traffic congestion on key roads, such as Gympie Road
– improvements to public transport and/or active transport on Gympie Road
– improve local and regional travel times
– improve the freight network, benefiting the regional economy.
Idea 5 – Alternative road upgrades
– widen key north-south roads to accommodate more traffic
– reduce traffic congestion
– improve local travel times.
OPTION 2 – Buses
Idea 1 – North West Transport Corridor busway
– increase connections to employment, services and facilities
– provide greater transport choice
– encourage walking and cycling
– link existing east-west networks with a new north-south corridor
– potential to expand Brisbane Metro to the north-west suburbs.
Idea 2 – Gympie Road busway
– increase connections to employment, services and facilities
– provide greater transport choice
– remove bus services from Gympie Road, reducing congestion
– improve bus travel times and reliability
– have potential to expand Brisbane Metro to the north-west suburbs.
Idea 3 – Priority bus services
– create new or improved bus routes (existing north-south roads or existing east-west roads)
– improve coverage across Brisbane’s north-west
– improve bus travel times and reliability
– consider north-south roads including Beckett Road, Webster Road and Old Northern Road, and east-west roads including Hamilton Road.
OPTION 3 – Rail
Idea 1 – North West Transport Corridor rail
– provide greater transport choice
– potentially link to Ferny Grove rail line in the short-term and Cross River Rail in the long-term
– encourage walking and cycling
– link existing east-west networks with a new north-south corridor
– support future rail planning for Brisbane and South East Queensland.
Idea 2 – Strathpine to Albion station upgrade
– create two new rail tracks between Strathpine and Albion stations
– increase capacity for more express services
– increase connections to public transport network and employment, services and facilities.
OPTION 4 – Multi-modal
Idea 1 – Multi-modal transport corridor
– provide greater transport choice
– increase connections to employment, services and facilities
– encourage walking and cycling
– link existing east-west networks with a new north-south corridor
– improve network connectivity, resulting in reduced traffic congestion.
OPTION 5 – Local transport network improvements
– improve travel times
– increase use of public transport
– eliminate potential conflicts between motorists and trains at open level crossings
– reduce traffic congestion at open level crossings during peak times
– increase parking capacity at public transport stations
– decrease number of motorists on roads travelling to key economic hubs like the CBD.
Stage 1
The Brisbane City Council in late 2019 invited residents to point out travel arrangements that could be improved and where transport services where needed. The community feedback was published as the North west transport business case community consultation report.

– From 27 November 2019 to 7 February 2020, Council is seeking community feedback on Brisbane’s north west transport future to inform the development of the business case.
– Council will publish a consultation report mid-2020.
Stage 2: Mid 2020 to late 2020
