A new development application has been lodged for Car Parking located at 949 and 957 Gympie Road, 5 Banfield Street and 395 Hamilton Road, Chermside.
Designed by Scentre Design & Construction, the proposal is to demolish existing buildings and structures on part of the Westfield Chermside shopping centre to facilitate redevelopment for additional car parking.
The Redevelopment includes the following:
• Demolition of the Chermside Green Motel
• Demolition of the Bob Jane T-Mart store.
• Realignment of the car parking layout to suit current access
• Line marking and removal of all existing access locations
• Provide new pedestrian access locations from Gympie Road through the car park
According to the planners at Cardno HRP, “the proposal to demolish existing buildings and repurpose the land for car parking ancillary to the shopping centre does not prejudice the future redevelopment opportunities consistent with both the Centre Concept Plan and the intent for development under the City Plan. The repurposing of the land is an interim use of the land until such time as there is a demand for the land to be redeveloped for other land use activities. This situation is not dissimilar to other ‘Future Building Site’ locations identified on the approved Centre Concept Plan which are currently being used for the purposes of ancillary car parking. Furthermore, the proposed development does not prejudice existing or future pedestrian connectivity or vehicle circulation to and from the shopping centre as represented on the approved Centre Concept Plan”.
Summary:
This applicant seeks to clear the site and place car parking in its place, at a time when Westfield has removed rooftop car parking to construct the next stage of the shopping centre.
