Brisbane Transit Centre to be Demolished in 2020 for Cross River Rail

The State Government has been announced that the Brisbane Transit Centre will be demolished, clearing the way for the new underground Roma Street Station as part of the Cross River Rail project. The Brisbane Transit Centre is integrated with the Roma Street Railway station and includes two commercial office towers, two levels of retail, commercial car park and coach terminal.

The announcements comes as AEG Worldwide representatives behind the Brisbane Live proposal visit Brisbane to discuss the business case and forward planning with Populous (architecture firm) and recently appointed Deloitte (leading consultancy firm).

Jackie Trad Deputy Premier & Treasurer states, “Roma Street Station is a key link between the city centre, Roma Street Parklands, Spring Hill’s schools, Caxton Street, the Petrie Barracks, Suncorp Stadium, and the cultural precinct at South Bank,” Ms Trad said.

“When complete the new station is expected to be used by more than 230,000 commuters every week, the equivalent of over four capacity crowds at Suncorp Stadium”. “However, the Brisbane Transit Centre is well past its prime, but by 2025 this end of the City will be totally transformed”.

Brisbane Live seeks an entertainment and stadium proposal that traverses the existing Roma Street Rail Yards and integrates with the new Cross River Rail project, creating a new city entrance for rail commuters from the western suburbs.

$5 Million commitment to review Cross River Rail & Brisbane Live Integration

“Without Cross River Rail, this type of urban renewal simply wouldn’t be possible, which is why the Palaszczuk Government has stepped up to fund this transformational piece of infrastructure.”

“With an 18,000 seat world-class arena as its centrepiece, the Roma Street precinct, just like the LA Live complex, will become Queensland’s premier entertainment venue hosting major live concerts and world class sporting events right in heart of the city”, the Deputy Premier said.

Project timeframe
– 2019: Early works
– 2020: Demolition to start
