$12 Million Film & Television Studios – 45 Gosport Street, Hemmant
A site in Hemmant has been announced as the preferred location for Brisbane’s new $12 million screen and television studio complex, in an announcement on Sunday 5 August 2018, by Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk.
The site contains five large vacant warehouses which will be converted by Screen Queensland into two (2) sound stages to accommodate simultaneous productions, as well as flexible spaces for wardrobe, costumes, makeup, prop construction, workshops and general warehousing.
Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said “Broadening our infrastructure offerings to local and international production companies is a key component of our Screen Industry 10 Year Roadmap and Action Plan”.
“We are investing in this vital Queensland industry, supporting the creative jobs of the future and continuing to put Queensland’s talented local practitioner’s centre-stage.
“Brisbane’s new complex, expected to be operational later this year, will be a complementary facility to the in demand, world-class, Village Road Show Studios on the Gold Coast,” the Premier said.
The new studios facilities will provide alternative opportunities for feature film and smaller productions. In a growing industry and with further investment, productions may also cater for Netflix, SBS and ABC television series. Recently a study by Deloitte found that the screen industry contributed almost $1 billion to the Queensland state’s economy.
“Establishing a new Screen Production Centre in Brisbane is a must-do. The lack of more screen production facilities in the city is hampering the development of a sustainable screen industry built upon an ever-growing pipeline of productions. I met with several major US studios during my trade mission in June 2018 and the level of interest in filming movies in Queensland is enormous”.
“I’m looking forward to seeing local practitioners taking advantage of these new facilities to tell our local stories and continue to showcase Queensland to the world’s audiences”. Ms Palaszczuk said.
20 days of community consultations will commence to provide the council, local businesses and residents an opportunity to have their say.
